Piston Systems – competence in powertrain
The
development and production of pistons and piston systems has always been
a core competence of MAHLE. On the basis of integrated, interna-tional
development work, we create integrated system solutions for our
customers with high-end engineering and state-of-the-art methods - for
example, piston assemblies and complete power cell modules.
Economically. Reliably. Every detail of the individual components is
perfectly adapted to the complete system. Whether for the engine of an
economical but powerful small car, for a luxury limousine or for
heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
Improved coating for less friction
The piston
skirt for gasoline engines with cast or steel cylinder surfaces is
usually coated with GRAFAL® at MAHLE. GRAFAL® helps to reduce friction
and hence increases the scuffing resistance. A further advantage of
GRAFAL®-coated pistons: They enable a closer fitting clearance which
leads to significantly lower engine noise in conjunction with complex
piston forms.
For the application in aluminum cylinder surfaces,
MAHLE uses the iron particle reinforced synthetic resin coating
FERROPRINT®. MAHLE's new FerroTec® galvanic iron layer is another
ongoing development available on the market. The FerroTec® technology
coats the entire skirt evenly, resulting in improved running properties.
These coatings are necessary to enable the combination of aluminum
pistons with pure aluminum engine blocks and hence represent an
essential contribution to an overall reduction in engine weight.
Mahle uses a 4032 silicon forging on
the vast majority of their LS-based pistons. For some of the extreme
duty applications, Mahle will use a 2618 alloy that is stronger and will
handle more extreme applications. For each part number listed in the
drop-down menu, we will note if the specific piston set is a 4032 or
2618 forging.
